Web Innovations Review

Browser Updates …. Headaches…. No More!

firefoxThe problems associated with the security and implementation of security updates to the millions of internet browsers have proved to be too much that researchers are now looking to take the browser system into the Clouds making the whole thing secure and out of the hands of the hackers who constantly test their resolve. The battle of the wits when it comes to dealing with malware is a difficult one involving many man-hours of having to analyze the problem, find a solution, formulate one, test it and then have to get each and every one of the installed browsers all over the world to get their copies updated, they never do. Jjot

One of the best web innovations out there is the ability to take notes online. The advantages of this is that you can read your notes anywhere with an online computer and Jjot is one of the better ones.

Jjot is a lightning fast sticky note web application filled with smart features like archiving, search, and sharing. Jjot is very easy to use and understand (which is nice when you’re tackling any new web application), but what really stands out about Jjot is its speed. Everything you do on Jjot is satisfyingly snappy, which is so refreshing in an age of bloated web apps. Granted, Jjot’s speed might not be enough to make it stand out in the already overcrowded online note-taking and todo applications, but it’s on my good list.

Firefox Privacy Mode in Beta

A big Firefox feature, but tiny in size was released as a beta version. The newest feature by Mozilla is Private Browsing. Other community fondly calls it the Porn Mode! The feature simply takes your browsing history, user names, password, cookies and web searches and trashes them when you close the window. It will definitely make sure that you leave no trace of your activity in the browser. The session may practically look like it did not take place. The feature is not new to other browsers because they are already implementing them to theirs. The feature can be started anytime during your browsing session. You just need to close all the existing tabs and start with the new tab that has popped out. In this mode you can expect to have some privacy without having to worry of your activities being seen by another user.

Storage Technologies for a Slowing Economy

In the ever looming economy, the need is imminent to the improvement of corporate computing efficiencies and cutting costs. It has been the center of attention during the Storage Networking World Conference recently. The data center requirements are growing by 55% every year and the hard disk drive capacities are just growing 30% in a year. They are trying to come up with solutions to the space limitations, high power cost and other technological choices. Green storage is also being brought up and was a big theme in the recent event. Cost of storage power and storage cooling neans a lot when going Green! And a lot of companies are taking measures to rise up to the challenge of going environmentally friendly. The solution possible to cut the cost of storage and cooling is calculated considering certain factors like temperaturem, alternative energy use for the data center, layered storage, consolidation and solid state storage.

How Threatening is Port Scanning?

Port scanning is a new growing security threat in the world wide web. Our personal computers have ports. They are used to connect to our mail server, to transfer files with FTP etc. These ports are always on and virtually listening. A port scan happens when a hacker scans a host pc to see which ports are open or not in use. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the bad guy will attack. However, this offenders will know which ports are locked or unlocked, creating an opportunity to invade your pc at a time he chooses. A firewall can readily give you added security for these types of attack. It practically guards every ports of your pc recording incoming and outgoing activities and if it suspects something unusual, or unknown , it automatically stops the threat. A port scan does not mean your system is about to be attacked. Its just as important to note that if a port scan occurs, someone knows certain weakness in your system. This should prompt us to take preventive measures, all the more.

An Overview of Box.net: Online Data Storage

Box.net has excellent features that will help you share files securely with friends, family and others—regardless of where they are. You can create a web address for a folder and then send the link by email from the application. You can also add a password to the folder so only those with the password can access the files.

With a premium membership, you can create sub–accounts and work groups. This allows a number of people to access and work on the same files. This is a great feature for virtual offices or so you can access important files while traveling.

Box.net has an integrated search function that makes it easy to locate a file without searching through all of your files, folders and sub–folders.
In order to download an entire folder, you’ll have to purchase a premium account; however, you are able to download files.

Let’s Focus on Web Innovation Again!

We’ve discussed before on Read/WriteWeb about how we’ve entered The Digestion Phase of the Web, a term that Alex Iskold coined. He defined it as “a period of time for us to reflect, to integrate, and to understand recent technologies and how they fit together.” Tim O’Reilly has also been reflecting on how innovation has slowed down and consolidation is occurring.
