BANGALORE, INDIA: The surge in social networking usage on the Internet, has also harvested numerous communities having various hues and traits. Then again, not all of them are able to hit the right chords.

The question that crops up is what makes a community successful. The second and concluding day of Web Innovation 2007 made an effort to address this query as buzzword shifted to creating networks and communities. Rohit Varma, vice president (Internet Services), Aptech Limited, before offering his tips, threw open his notion of social networking.

�It�s not about social networking. It�s about social networks,� Varma pointed out. Seed, weed and feed, this is what he preached. Use moderator, but don�t be in a hurry. He advocated leveraging the power of social networks – trust and interest.

�We need both. Use social networks to make decision-involving trust.� Speaking about social network opportunities, Varma proposed communities on finance, health, and traffic congestion. �Social networks strengthen weak ties more than creating new ones. But framework exists to create new ones,� he said.

He also said that big players have become dinosaurs, who can�t move any more. �They can only acquire small companies.� Before building a community, think of offline behavior, said Rohit Agarwal, CEO, techTribe.

The internet has changed by leaps and bounds ever since it grew way beyond the specifications set for it by the people who thought of a nationwide network of computers that were linked together to warn the other of pending nuclear attack. Today, the internet changes day by day with new companies being put up as old ones die off and wither into distant memory. The many browsers we now is a welcome sight for a few years back and we only had one way of browsing the internet, using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Way back then, there were only two who fought for the crown as the browser to beat, Netscape and IE with the first collapsing, victim of the fast growing internet giving way to IE’s dominance of the net.
Then came the concept of open-sourced computing, where communities decided on the design and form software would take rather than have a company secretly developing and giving you the final product, no buts no changes. Those days have also passed, and we now have Chrome, IE, Firefox and many more, all fighting in what is called as the Browser Wars, fighting for a share of the internet that can only be made sense of using a web browser. IE has lost it’s crown to FireFox which continues to dominate the net, much like IE did a few years back, now that’s irony.

The move to promote cloud computing has many people worried about the possible implications of computer and programs that run systems out of anybody’s control (at least that’s what they are saying the system would take shape in). But the truth of the fact is that somebody has to own, run and manage the systems on which the cloud would take shape in. Cloud computing is a more distributed form of client-server based applications with people paying the people who own the data centers on which your data and programs resides in a fee for the amount of computing stuff you do.
Scary enough? Consider the many times when Google has experienced a hiccup and factor that into the whole cloud computing equation (Google has one of the largest data centers thus is most likely to rent out most of it’s idle or spare processing power to the cloud) and it does become quite scary indeed. It may take more time in the pressure cooker that is the many think-tanks who have to iron out all the details before they do get much of the many proposed systems onto the cloud. There are a few pioneering programs that are in the clouds but on an experimental state rather than full-blown deployment.
