But it is very important that you know who are the visitors to the SharePoint site and where do they spend most time. To make this task easier many known software companies have come up with web analytics tools to help users find which content is popular and which is not. Likewise, SharePoint 2010 too has integrated a Web Analytics feature, which helps you collect, report, and analyze the usage and effectiveness of your SharePoint 2010 deployment. To put it in simple words, Web Analytics reveals which content is most popular and which is not.

Take advantage of SharePoint Web Analytics tool and other useful features of SharePoint 2010 hosting, SharePoint Foundation hosting or SharePoint Server 2010 – with shared or dedicated hosting by a SharePoint 2010 hosting provider.

Web Analytics Reports
In SharePoint 2010, the Web Analytics reports that are available out-of-the-box provide insights into the behavior of users of your SharePoint sites. There are three categories of reports that are produced which are as follows:

* Inventory Web Analytics reports: Inventory Web analytics reports provide key metrics of the inventory of your sites:
1. What is the total disk drive space user (Storage Usage);
2. How many sites exist (Number of Sites);
3. Top Site Product Versions, Top Site Languages, etc;

* Traffic Web Analytics reports: Traffic Web Analytics reports provide metrics such as:
1. How much traffic your site gets (Number of Page Views);
2. Who visits your sites (Top Visitors);
3. How visitors arrive at your site (Top Referrers);
4. Daily Unique Visitors, Top Destinations, Top Browsers, etc;

* Search Web Analytics reports: Search Web Analytics reports give you insight into what users are searching for. For instance:
1. How many times users searched (Number of Queries);
2. What were the most used search terms (Top Queries);
3. What queries have high failure rates (Failed Queries);
4. Best Bet Usage, Search keywords, etc;

Custom Web Analytics Reports

It is possible to create your own custom web analytics reports by using the Customize Report button under the Analyze tab in the Ribbon. Clicking this button will export the data contained in this report to Excel. Excel is a power analytics tools and makes it easy for non technical users to add your own charts, set specific filters, and combine data from multiple reports. In addition, the data within Excel is refreshable, which means that, once you customize the report, it will always be up-to-date with the latest data.

Features of Web Analytics Tool

Best Bets Suggestions: Best Bets allow search administrators to determine what the most relevant search result is for a given keyword. Now administrators can simply look through each of the Best Bet suggestions and easily accept or reject them. To access the Best Bet Suggestions, go to Site Actions, click on Site Collection Web Analytics Reports, and the click on Best Bets Suggestions on the left navigation.

Web Analytics Web Part: The Web Analytics Web Part is mainly created for Site Managers. This new Web Analytics Web Part is an end-user facing Web Part that can be easily inserted into any page on your site. It can be configured to display the ‘most viewed content’ or the ‘most frequent search queries’ in the site. The data in the Web Part is continuously refreshed as new content or new search queries become more popular.

All in all, Web Analytics in SharePoint 2010 will help you better understand what users want from your site, what are the popular content on your site, etc. Web analytics tool will help you customize your SharePoint farm to best meet their needs.

reland-based telecommunications provider Eircom (eircom.net) announced on Thursday that it has launched a Web Innovation Fund (eircom.net/innovation) to promote, mentor and sponsor innovative Web applications in the Irish Internet industry. The company says this demonstrates its strong commitment to foster entrepreneurship in the online sector.

The fund is worth approximately 100,000 EUR annually and up to four concepts will be selected each year. Winners will enter into an agreement with Eircom whereby concepts are developed through to production and, if appropriate, initially launched on the Eircom.net platform. Winners will also receive Web hosting and broadband packages, an introduction to business development services by Enterprise Ireland and marketing and promotions.

“The aim of the fund is to incubate creative and innovative Web application development at the grassroots in Ireland,” says Cathal Magee, managing director of Eircom Retail. “The establishment of the fund is a clear signal of Eircom’s outward approach to innovation. The company must be well positioned to maintain its leadership position as the next wave of Web services are introduced.”

Applicants are invited to submit concepts across nine key categories including discovery, messaging, voice, location, publishing, communities, content creation, advertising and identity. Submissions are due by December 10.

The political Web continues to grow as new databases are established every week regularly using new technologies to present important information. I came across three new Web sites, one government and two from nonprofits, today and figured I’d pass them along. The first is the Government Printing Office’s online guide to members of Congress. The GPO’s online guide allows users to search members of Congress by a number of categories, including name, hometown, terms served, and more. The database is fairly rudimentary but it does allow someone to do quick searches for members from a particular state or see how many members have served for 5 terms. This is good step for GPO as it shows that they looking towards using the Web to project information; all they need is to add more search categories and more information for the member profiles. More links to more information makes the data more useful.

Second, we have a great collection and presentation of government RSS feeds from Legistorm. Legistorm’s “The Score” is a one-stop shop for up-to-the-minute government information hosting RSS feeds of the floor of the House, reports from the GAO, CBO, Executive Orders, and Statements of Administration Policy, and headlines from the blog Political Wire. The Score also shows the schedule for the House and Senate floors and the schedule for House and Senate committee hearings. For the lighter side of things they also post top political cartoons of the day. It looks a lot like a preset, government information-only Netvibes page. If you’re watching Congress this is a pretty sweet view.

Most of the time, viewing the internet in your smartphone can be more of a hassle: text-heavy, very little images, slow, and cumbersome. This was more likely due to both the smartphone’s ageing hardware and likewise integrated web browser. With the creation of better and more technologically capable smartphones, most expect some improvements with the browser as well. Well, here comes Skyfire to make your mobile web viewing so much better.

The new mobile browser brings the true internet (like you’d experience from your desktop or laptop computer) to Windows Mobile smartphones. Flash-advertisements, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook – any and all web-pages load in speedy fashion thanks to Skyfire’s behind-the-scenes server-magic. With integrated Flash support, animated/interactive advertisements come to life, embedded videos play in the browser, and Flash-based web-pages are finally viewable.

Available for Windows Mobile 5 and 6. It can be integrated whether your smartphone is touch or non-touchscreen. It is currently still under beta testing.

In event by Orange Lab, Im honored to have chance to make a presentation on web innovations in China. Yes, we all think most of Chinese Internet apps are copied from Silicon Valley, and it is almost impossible to find disruptive innovation or killer apps in China. However, we can still find some innovative services in sectors which address the demand of Chinese Internet users.

The term is audacious: Web 2.0. It assumes a certain interpretation of Web history, including enough progress in certain directions to trigger a succession. The label casts the reader back to Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s unleashing of the World Wide Web concept a little more than a decade ago, then asks: What forms of the Web have developed and become accepted enough that we can conceive of a transition to new ones?

Many people—including, or perhaps especially, supporters—critique the “Web 2.0” moniker for definitional reasons. Few can agree on even the general outlines of Web 2.0. It is about no single new development. Moreover, the term is often applied to a heterogeneous mix of relatively familiar and also very emergent technologies. The former may appear as very much “Web 1.0,” and the latter may be seen as too evanescent to be relied on for serious informatics work. Indeed, one leading exponent of this movement deems continuous improvement to be a hallmark of such projects, which makes pinning down their identities even more difficult.1 Yet we can survey the ground traversed by Web 2.0 projects and discussions in order to reveal a diverse set of digital strategies with powerful implications for higher education.2 Ultimately, the label “Web 2.0” is far less important than the concepts, projects, and practices included in its scope.

Web professionals are well aware that we live in an age marked by an ever-increasing rate of innovation and change. Within the tech industry, we witness the endless buzz about the newest technological innovation of the week. Outside the tech industry, business publications trip over each other to cover the next innovative gadget, business model, leader, or workspace. With such wide-ranging use of the word innovation, how does it relate to a web professional’s day-to-day work, and how do we sift through the buzz to find the secrets of authentic innovation?

We have deep flaws in our collective memory of innovation and invention. Ask anyone to give an example of innovation and you’ll typically hear the same examples—the Gutenberg press, the lightbulb, the automobile, the television, the computer. Berkun’s point is that both memory and history rarely acknowledge the gradual breakthroughs and back-story that support those innovations. Acknowledging the rich, intricate paths behind innovations is a good start to correcting the myths.
Currently, the word innovation is about as muddied in the business world as intuitive or Web 2.0. In an effort to reclaim the rich and valuable ideas behind the word, author and consultant Scott Berkun exposes our misconceptions about innovation, and clearly shows us how to realign our expectations and assumptions about the concept.

BANGALORE, INDIA: The surge in social networking usage on the Internet, has also harvested numerous communities having various hues and traits. Then again, not all of them are able to hit the right chords.

The question that crops up is what makes a community successful. The second and concluding day of Web Innovation 2007 made an effort to address this query as buzzword shifted to creating networks and communities. Rohit Varma, vice president (Internet Services), Aptech Limited, before offering his tips, threw open his notion of social networking.

“It’s not about social networking. It’s about social networks,” Varma pointed out. Seed, weed and feed, this is what he preached. Use moderator, but don’t be in a hurry. He advocated leveraging the power of social networks – trust and interest.

“We need both. Use social networks to make decision-involving trust.” Speaking about social network opportunities, Varma proposed communities on finance, health, and traffic congestion. “Social networks strengthen weak ties more than creating new ones. But framework exists to create new ones,” he said.

He also said that big players have become dinosaurs, who can’t move any more. “They can only acquire small companies.” Before building a community, think of offline behavior, said Rohit Agarwal, CEO, techTribe.
