Web Innovations Review

IE8 - New and Improved

The internet has changed by leaps and bounds ever since it grew way beyond the specifications set for it by the people who thought of a nationwide network of computers that were linked together to warn the other of pending nuclear attack. Today, the internet changes day by day with new companies being put up as old ones die off and wither into distant memory. The many browsers we now is a welcome sight for a few years back and we only had one way of browsing the internet, using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Way back then, there were only two who fought for the crown as the browser to beat, Netscape and IE with the first collapsing, victim of the fast growing internet giving way to IE’s dominance of the net. The Clouds and Human Nature

The move to promote cloud computing has many people worried about the possible implications of computer and programs that run systems out of anybody’s control (at least that’s what they are saying the system would take shape in). But the truth of the fact is that somebody has to own, run and manage the systems on which the cloud would take shape in. Cloud computing is a more distributed form of client-server based applications with people paying the people who own the data centers on which your data and programs resides in a fee for the amount of computing stuff you do. IE8-Less Win 7

Coming to the many countries of the EU, is a release version of Windows 7, set for release this coming holiday season without a bundled version of the much embattled IE8. Why, considering the staunch stand the EU has taken on their bullish stance against competitors, they might be getting a taste of their own medicine. The browser is available for download from the Support site, free of charge for licensed Windows owners and can be installed after installation of the new OS. Even people on XP and Vista can get hold of a copy of the popular browser with a quick check of your system if it meets minimum system requirements that is. (more…)

Malware, Why it can’t be stopped

The world connected by the internet may never be truly free of malware or malicious programs that probes for unprotected computers and programs, ready to exploit any weaknesses found. These programs are designed ever so cleverly as to escape detection, with most doing their wrongdoing without even raising an eyebrow as to what has happened. Governments around the world and the many security companies have been battling them aggressively in efforts to tame them but the major enemy is the opacity of the internet. (more…)

A professional touch to social networking

In this day and age, many people are starting to see the value of having an online presence in order to better market their skills and services to potential clients. The only trouble is that many social networking sites are so saturated with so much people - most of whom aren’t using the site for professional purposes - that employers skip it altogether.

linked

What’s different now is that LinkedIn, a social networking site, aims to be a social network, but only for those with professional interests and those who wish to start getting professional and corporate contacts. LinkedIn really has no difference from regular social networking sites - it’s just that LinkedIn’s features are geared towards establishing professional relationships. Its sort of like Facebook, but only for professionals. You can post resumes, CVs and work samples here, and satisfied employers will also put recommendations on your profile.

Browser Updates …. Headaches…. No More!

firefoxThe problems associated with the security and implementation of security updates to the millions of internet browsers have proved to be too much that researchers are now looking to take the browser system into the Clouds making the whole thing secure and out of the hands of the hackers who constantly test their resolve. The battle of the wits when it comes to dealing with malware is a difficult one involving many man-hours of having to analyze the problem, find a solution, formulate one, test it and then have to get each and every one of the installed browsers all over the world to get their copies updated, they never do. Jjot

One of the best web innovations out there is the ability to take notes online. The advantages of this is that you can read your notes anywhere with an online computer and Jjot is one of the better ones.

Jjot is a lightning fast sticky note web application filled with smart features like archiving, search, and sharing. Jjot is very easy to use and understand (which is nice when you’re tackling any new web application), but what really stands out about Jjot is its speed. Everything you do on Jjot is satisfyingly snappy, which is so refreshing in an age of bloated web apps. Granted, Jjot’s speed might not be enough to make it stand out in the already overcrowded online note-taking and todo applications, but it’s on my good list.

Firefox Privacy Mode in Beta

A big Firefox feature, but tiny in size was released as a beta version. The newest feature by Mozilla is Private Browsing. Other community fondly calls it the Porn Mode! The feature simply takes your browsing history, user names, password, cookies and web searches and trashes them when you close the window. It will definitely make sure that you leave no trace of your activity in the browser. The session may practically look like it did not take place. The feature is not new to other browsers because they are already implementing them to theirs. The feature can be started anytime during your browsing session. You just need to close all the existing tabs and start with the new tab that has popped out. In this mode you can expect to have some privacy without having to worry of your activities being seen by another user.

Storage Technologies for a Slowing Economy

In the ever looming economy, the need is imminent to the improvement of corporate computing efficiencies and cutting costs. It has been the center of attention during the Storage Networking World Conference recently. The data center requirements are growing by 55% every year and the hard disk drive capacities are just growing 30% in a year. They are trying to come up with solutions to the space limitations, high power cost and other technological choices. Green storage is also being brought up and was a big theme in the recent event. Cost of storage power and storage cooling neans a lot when going Green! And a lot of companies are taking measures to rise up to the challenge of going environmentally friendly. The solution possible to cut the cost of storage and cooling is calculated considering certain factors like temperaturem, alternative energy use for the data center, layered storage, consolidation and solid state storage.

How Threatening is Port Scanning?

Port scanning is a new growing security threat in the world wide web. Our personal computers have ports. They are used to connect to our mail server, to transfer files with FTP etc. These ports are always on and virtually listening. A port scan happens when a hacker scans a host pc to see which ports are open or not in use. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the bad guy will attack. However, this offenders will know which ports are locked or unlocked, creating an opportunity to invade your pc at a time he chooses. A firewall can readily give you added security for these types of attack. It practically guards every ports of your pc recording incoming and outgoing activities and if it suspects something unusual, or unknown , it automatically stops the threat. A port scan does not mean your system is about to be attacked. Its just as important to note that if a port scan occurs, someone knows certain weakness in your system. This should prompt us to take preventive measures, all the more.
